Default Is my personal rate of return above or below average?

Hi, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.

I have 10 funds in my 401k plan. The plan provides my personal rate of return for the year. It is currently at 1.3%

How can I tell if this number is below or above average compared to what others are getting in their 401ks. Or compared to what the market and economy is doing?

Thanks.

Do you mean 1.3% for the full year 2015? If so, that is above average compared to the financial industry. Here are some common benchmarks you can use to compare against.

VBINX (low cost index fund, 60/40 stocks and bonds) - 2015 return was 0.37%

Average of 3 Hedge Fund Indexes (HFRI, CSFB, Eurekahedge) - 2015 return was -0.85%

Personally my fund returned 29.81%. You can view my full results plus a detailed view of every trade made on my website. See profile for the link.

A good benchmark to compare it to is the DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average) or the S&P 500.

Stock market benchmarks are ok, but they don't give a very good indication of the average returns since nearly nobody puts 100% of their portfolio in the stock market.

That's why I like to measure against broad funds like All hedge fund indexes or balanced index funds.

You can even track your own really quickly and easily in a spreadsheet.

50% SPY
30% TLT
20% GLD

If you track that you'll have a really good benchmark to compare your own results against. If you can consistently beat that benchmark you're doing better then about 85% of the financial industry...
