Default Protection for Personal Info.

Just recently a politician lost or had his laptop stolen here and a kinds of peoples SS #'s were on this computer. While I was one of the lucky ones. I have recieved something in the mail stating the state is going to pay for protection for one year through this company. We will be notified if anyone uses our SS#. After that year we have to pay to keep it. My question is does anyone happen to know if the three credit agencis offer some kind of protection for this? I was told that you can alert them and the will moniter it for free.

You can post a fraud alert on your credit report with the details so that whenever your report is accessed it will raise a red flag. You also have the right to an annual report from each of the 3 reporting companies. You should pull one of the 3 free reports every 4 months to keep an eye on activity and question anything that looks suspicious. No one will watch it as well as you will.

Tater,
I'm so sorry this happened to you. The IT policy I recently implemented for the companies I consult to prohibits laptop use with and city files. They either do it at work on the secured system or it doesn't get done.

PERIOD.

If it makes you feel any better, it was that story hitting the news that made me add that to my policy.

I cannot imagine having my ssn at risk like that. I remember when recently the VA had a scare like that.

I would pull my credit at the end of every month and also get an alert that emails you anytime you get an inquiry on your credit report.
