Default Stupid contracts - Rant

I hope people won't get too upset, but I have to get something off my chest.

We have DirecTV and were supposed to get a free DVR box. They never sent the paperwork for the box, and so I never got reimbursed my money. So, basically I bought the box.

Now, we're having financial problems and have a past due amount on our bill. I just CAN'T pay the whole thing right now. So, I'm talking to someone in collection and they inform me I have a contract. If I purchased the box outright, there should be no contract, right? If I break the contract, it's going to cost me $300. If I can't pay a $45 bill, I'm surely not going to be able to pay the $300!!

And, to make things worse, I can't talk to anyone AT DirecTV UNTIL I have my bill caught up to find out what contract I'm under, and why. So what am I supposed to do? I pay them, or I pay my electric. Help!

I don't get why they cannot tell you what contract you are under? That is just ridiculous to me. Am I understanding that you never got the box but they still want you to pay for it. I hate companies that are this way. There is no way that they will let you make payments? I hope you get some resolution.

I am sorry to hear you have a problem with them. I got the same deal, and I got the money.

No reason for anyone to get upset... it's about finances and it's in general
chat right where it should be. Well this sounds like a horrid mess! It
sounds a little bit to me like they owe YOU money... the reimbursement for
the box, and maybe if they ever LISTEN to you, they'll subtract that from
the bill you owe. Is there a local office? If so, that usually works better
than trying to get someone to listen on the phone if you're standing right
there in front of them.

You may need to see the manager and not just the collections phone
person, as an afterthought here.

I would agree sometimes if you can go into a local office and talk to someone in person that seems to work better in getting something resolved. What ever happened anyway with this?

Ooops, good catch, tater03! I read that question as if it was newly written and it was from April! If you're still here, mamab, did they ever reimburse you for that box? Was the bill straighted out?
